Dear Friends of Cornelia Connelly Center,

Since 1993, Cornelia Connelly Center (CCC) has been a home for girls’ voices, dreams, and ambitions on the Lower East Side. Our mission centers on education, compassion, and community—ensuring every girl’s story is heard and celebrated.

As a proud CCC alumna, Class of 1997, it is an honor to return at such an exciting moment in the life of our school. Reconnecting with this space is deeply meaningful to me, and I look forward to sharing the stories of my fellow alumni, current students, and friends of CCC who continue to uplift and support our community.

At CCC, her story is the foundation: every student, alumna, and teacher brings their journey, experiences, and hopes, enriching our community in ways that inspire us all.

We’re honored to share a glimpse into the voices that embody Her Story.

In joyful anticipation,

Denia Tavarez, CMS ’97

Her Story

Student Spotlight:

MiaBella Martinez, CMS ’26

This past summer, 7th grader Mia Bella Martinez took a brave step—joining the TEAK Fellowship for her very first summer session. From the beginning, Mia’s entire family embraced the opportunity alongside her, attending meetings, engaging in the rigorous application process, and cheering her on every step of the way. Their commitment reflects the heart of the CCC community:when families and students grow together, it nurtures a deeper sense of belonging, purpose, and shared joy in learning.

While she initially felt nervous stepping into a new environment, Mia quickly found a community of smart, motivated, and supportive peers.

“At CCC, I usually help my classmates. But at TEAK, I had classmates helping me too,” she shared. “It felt good to be part of a group where everyone was learning and pushing each other to do better.”

Over six weeks, Mia strengthened her math and writing skills while exploring creative subjects like podcasting, improv, photography, and creative writing. Field trips brought learning to life, and she mastered the art of balancing a demanding schedule—skills that will serve her well into high school, college, and beyond.

Curiosity is powerful.

“Every new subject or challenge is a chance to discover something I didn’t know before,” she said.

Mia also discovered her own resilience. From memorizing Greek tragedies to making new friends, she realized she could accomplish more than she imagined. Looking ahead, she dreams of a future on Broadway, and with the confidence and curiosity she’s building at CCC, she’s already on her way.

Alumna Reflections

Samantha Saunion, CMS ’05

Tech Industry –

Meta Platforms, Inc.

Samantha’s journey embodies resilience and curiosity. Growing up in a single-parent Puerto Rican household, she learned early the power of perseverance. At CCC, she found a community that nurtured her voice, encouraged her to ask questions, and demonstrated that curiosity is a strength.

With guidance from mentors like Ms. Connie Bush, Samantha became the first in her family to attend college at Syracuse University. Today, she thrives at Meta, at the forefront of technology and innovation, where learning never stops.

“Learning is everything,” Samantha reflects, crediting CCC with instilling the drive to remain a lifelong learner.

Beyond academics, cultural celebrations, and strong female role models taught her to embrace her roots and take pride in her identity.

Her advice to current students?

“Lift up the women coming behind you, and never stop exploring your passions.”

Sam Diaz, CMS ’14

Tech Industry –

Morning Brew, Inc.

Sam Diaz’s journey is a testament to curiosity and perseverance. Today thriving as an Account Manager at Morning Brew, Inc., she credits CCC for opportunities she wouldn’t have had elsewhere—summer camp, science classes at the American Museum of Natural History, and small, hands-on classrooms that encouraged her to speak up and explore new things.

“The mentorship program was incredible. My mentor is still a part of my life today,” Sam shares.

She also emphasizes that CCC taught her to embrace challenges: “Stay curious. Learning doesn’t stop after school. Try new things, fail, try again—you’ll be surprised at what you can achieve.”

As a first-generation high school and college graduate, Sam’s path reflects both confidence and gratitude. That gratitude inspired her to give back by assisting with the Alumni Reunion in 2023, celebrating CCC’s 30th anniversary. For her, curiosity isn’t just a skill—it’s a way of life.

Looking ahead, Sam is focused on growing her career with the goal of becoming an executive leader in the tech industry.

Teacher Spotlight:

Fletcher Laico, Dean of Curriculum and Instruction

For the past four years, Mr. Laico has been a cornerstone of CCC. Beginning as a sixth grade teacher, he now leads seventh and eighth grade Humanities and supports curriculum across classrooms. His focus remains on his passion—Humanities and English.

“History alone felt incomplete,” he explains. “Humanities brings together history, literature, and personal stories. Students connect what they read to their families, their culture, and the world around them.”

After years in rigid charter schools, Mr. Laico found CCC to be the opposite—

a place where joy, community, and curiosity fuel learning.

Field Trip“Students here don’t just rise to challenges—they exceed them. They love learning, take risks, and are fully invested in their growth.

He thrives on creating “peak moments” of discovery and inspiration. A natural relationship-builder, he connects with students through shared interests. Whether coaching track in the spring or bonding over basketball, his ability to meet students where they are, builds trust and strengthens learning in the classroom.

Now a new dad to his daughter Clover, he brings even more patience, empathy, and perspective to his work. At CCC, Mr. Laico empowers students to fall in love with learning—a gift they carry into high school, college, and beyond.
